Typoe at Orlando Museum of Art
Watch
"I think my identity is everything to my work. I think who I am, where I was raised, how I was raised—my whole landscape informs my work."
In Miami, Typoe grew up around vibrant culture and a mix of different people. The sculptures in this exhibition are based on the signage he saw everywhere—light boxes on 7-Elevens and strip clubs, things that were normal to him and part of his everyday vernacular. Whether he liked it or not, those images seeped their way into his brain.
"I love when people come in and have no idea at first what's going on. I have this saying: once the work leaves my studio, it's not really mine anymore. Each person brings their own U-Haul full of issues—their childhoods and the way they were brought up. I love seeing people respond and react, either repel or attract towards the work."
The exhibition features illuminated sculptures in darkened galleries, continuing Typoe's exploration of light as a reference to the afterlife—the light at the end of the tunnel.
